The Novice Race Drivers Scheme

Every year there are over 300 motor racing meetings in the UK. These keenly contested championships vary greatly and can be based on regions, circuits, makes of car, types of car etc. From road-going saloons to expensive single-seaters there really is something for every aspiring racing driver.

The one thing that all participants do have in common in order to compete in these races is that novice racing drivers are obliged to undergo a half day of training at one of the Association of Racing Drivers' Schools (ARDS) before they can obtain a National B Race Licence.

As a founder member of ARDS, The Racing School provides this course at 3 of its UK circuits: Donington Park, Mallory Park and Rockingham. The course is available to aspiring racing drivers age 17 and upwards. Prior to attending the course drivers have to obtain a 'Go Racing' pack from the MSA and if over 18 have to produce a medical certificate.

The Course Format

• Welcome and briefing from a senior instructor

• Drivers watch the official MSA DVD which is an introduction to novice racing, circuit discipline and safety, flag signals etc

• 20 minute Circuit Test - this is split into two sessions: 10 minutes tuition, followed by a 10 minute assessment by the instructor

• Written multiple choice test - 27 questions based on the information given by the instructor in the earlier briefing and on the DVD

On successfully passing the course the instructor stamps and sign the MSA application form and then it is sent off for a National B Race licence.

The course is run using an Alfa Romeo Guilietta.

Minimum Requirements

• You must be at least 17 years old.

• Before you can apply for your first Race Licence, you must do the following:

1. Purchase a "Go Racing" starter pack from the MSA. This pack includes a DVD, a copy of the MSA Competitors Yearbook, the necessary application form, plus various other useful items.

2. If 18 or over, obtain a medical certificate (the form for completion is in the "Go Racing" pack).

3. Complete a half-day MSA course for novice drivers run only by members of the Association of Racing Drivers Schools (ARDS).
