Owner Drivers Pro Kart Racing June
21 teams lined up on a sunny Tuesday evening for our 6th race of the year, pretty good conditions for racing, and a decent grid considering a couple of high profile absences and apparently some sort of international sporting fixture! Team 22, GC Racing took had the pace in qualifying setting a 46.5, with CPM lining up 2nd just 0.068s behind. Laptimes were a little slower than we have been seeing, the track being just that little bit green following the recent rain (also known as British Summertime!) and a busy weekend with bikes on the track.
Moving to the race, everyone got off to a clean start, for the first few laps at least. The pole leapt off into an early lead, before being overtaken by frequent frontrunners CPM. The field was tightly packed over the first four laps until team 23, Gits 4 made an ambitious move for 2nd place, still on cold tyres. Unfortunately the driver then lost control, spinning and being collected by our polesitters, GC and team 33 RA Racing. Team 4, Mizzi also got involved, but managed to continue, to complete the stint. The Hairbears and Pitlane 2000 were the winners from the collision, as were EcoLab, moving from the mid pack to2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.
The race then calmed down a little with the top 3 pulling away from the chasing pack, Pitlane 2000 fell back a little from their inherited position, but the Hairbears kept hold of 2nd for the next 10 laps, before falling back behind EcoLab on lap 23. The top three would then stay in that order until lap 44, when the Hairbears pitted. Roch Valley initially took 3rd, before falling briefly back to 4th in their battle with Gits 4. Not be be kept behind for long they then re-took the position on lap 51, eventually moving to 2nd as CPM stopped from the lead, with EcoLab inheriting the postion.
It was at about this point we had our second more serious collision of the race. Team 67, Chase the Dragon got caught out in the traffic, getting pinched between two other karts causing the kart to become airborne. Thankfully the driver was fine, and drove the karts back to the pits, before being checked by our medic.
Into the latter stages of the race EcoLab maintained 1st, and looked as if they could hold it to the end, the team even making the tactical decision to keep driver in the kart, so as not to risk any time lost in the driver changes. CPM moved back into 2nd before being passed by P2, themselves having a great end to the race having moved up a number of positions. Never one to be beaten they took the position back on lap 117. This left them in prime postion to take advantage of any mistake from EcoLab and they did just that. With only a few laps remaining EcoLab misjudged how much fuel they'd burnt, added to the lighter driver, and came in 1kg underweight. The time penalty pushed them down the order giving the win to CPM, with P2 in 2nd and the Hairbears also having a great race to finish 3rd.
So after a rather eventful race we move onto July. Hopefully we'll be seeing a few more teams! Special mention also has to be made to our new teams, FireFly, TMC and Rodent Racing, unfortunately the latter couldn't start the race due to a blown engine, but no doubt we'll see them back! It is always great to see new teams on the grid and hopefully they'll become regulars!
As ever we look forward to seeing you all next month, don't forget to book in advance!
