Owner Drivers Pro Kart Racing – May

23 teams lined up on a sunny Tuesday evening for our 5th race of the year, the perfect conditions for racing, provided you weren’t planning on tackling the two hour race solo! Team 43, Lucas took had the pace in qualifying setting a 46.210, with CPM lining up 2nd 0.312s behind. The first of our club class races took 3rd, Team 33 RA Racing just a few 100ths of a second behind 2nd.

Moving to the race, everyone got off to a clean start. The pole sitter set the early pace and led strongly the first 82 laps. Team 33 made a great start, taking advantage of a poor first lap by CPM and moved into 2nd place with GKD 66 also benefitting and moving into 3rd, before being overtaken by Team 2, the Hairbears on lap 44. There was then an exciting tussle over the next 20 laps for 2nd and 3rd with GKD, RA racing and the Hairbears following in close formation, looking for opportunities to pass in the traffic.

Moving to the middle of the race Lucas continued to dominate while Team 81 CPM got into the 2nd place battle with GKD with each inheriting the lead through the fuel stops. Unfortunatley missing from the battle was the The Hairbears who dropped back down to 7th, before having to retire on lap 107. A sad end to one of their most competitive showings of the year.

It was remarkable that despite the heat and pace of the race there was not a single major incident, a welcome relief for the Three Sisters marshals following the last two races red flag incidents!

Into the latter stages of the race Lucas re-took the lead on lap 99 and never looked likely to be challenged, eventually finishing a lap ahead of 2nd place CPM. Throughout the race it looked as if either GKD or RA Racing would take the 3rd spot, but a late surge from P2 racing let them take 3rd on lap 121, a position that they stayed in to the end. Still an impressive performace from RA Racing left them the winners of the club class, a lap ahead of 2nd in the class, Mizzi Racing with the Petchtrolheads taking 3rd in the club class.

Moving on we look forward to our next race on the 19th of June. We’ve had a number of new teams appear for testing both during the week and before the previous race, so it’ll be great to see them finally make the race. Hopefully we might just have the same weather conditions too!
